Some of the stories here have elements of surreal fantasy and all seek to involve the reader in the construction of their meaning. Even when we are on foreign earth we are never far from our own private landscape.Gerald Murnane was born in Melbourne in 1939. From 1960 to 1973, he worked as a teacher and developed educational publications. He published his first novels in 1974. In 1980, he became a lecturer, whilst continuing to write. Murnane won the FAW Barbara Ramsden Award for Velvet Waters in 1991. He received the Patrick White Literary Award in 1999. He currently lives in Melbourne.
